The Rokan PSC
Description
The Rokan PSC operated by PT Chevron Pacific Indonesia (CPI), a subsidiary of Chevron in Indonesia, is one of the largest crude oil producers in Indonesia. Over 2D and 3D seismic have been compiled and there are more than 400 wells within its contract areas in Central Sumatra. In 2011, most Sumatran oil production came from the Rokan PSC fields. The Duri Field has been using steam-flood technology to increase production since 1985, and is one of the biggest steam-flood development fields in the world. Since 2011, steam injection technology has been applied in 80% of the field.
Exploration in the Central Sumatra Basin by CPI was initiated as early as 1936 when the Standard Oil Company and the Texas Oil Company formed a joint venture and named the new company CALTEX. The first hydrocarbon discovery was made in 1940 in Sebanga, a gas field. Then the two giant oil fields, Duri and Minas, were discovered in 1941 and 1944 respectively. Over more than five decades, the Rokan PSC has produced more than 12 billion barrels of oil. Eleven billion of these came from the oil onshore oil fields in Sumatra. Chevron has 9,334 of production wells, and 4,537 of non-production wells.
The Rokan PSC working area in Central Sumatra, covers the Bengkalis, Kampar, Rokan Hulu, Rokan Hilir and Siak districts of Riau. The PSC covers an area of 6,264 km2 containing 84 fields. CPI operates three major oil fields – Duri, Minas and Bekasap – as well as managing Dumai Wharf, the final terminal for oil transport.
In the Duri Field, CPI manage one of the world’s largest steam-flood operations, the Duri Steam Flood, which employs state-of-the-art technology to recover heavy crude oil from relatively shallow reservoirs, and produces a unique type of crude oil known as Duri Crude. There are 212 production wells, and 58 steam injection and observation wells have been drilled since 2011.
Development of the Duri Field continues in the northern area. The Minas Field is the largest oil field ever discovered in South East Asia, and using water-flood injection technology, it produces the world-renowned Sumatran Light Crude. Several other fields, such as Aman, Bekasap, Bangko, Cebakan, Kotabatak Libo Se and Pungut developed by EOR use water injection in target reservoirs.
