35 Gigawatt Power Plant Project to Create 3 Million Jobs

KATADATA ? The government stated that in addition to meeting domestic electricity demand, the 35,000 MW power plant project has a bigger purpose. The project is expected to have significant impact on Indonesia?s economic growth.

Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Sudirman Said stated that the electricity project is expected to boost the economic growth of the surrounding areas. The power plants will be constructed in 210 sites throughout Indonesia, which comprise of 59 sites in Sumatra, 34 sites in Java, 49 sites in Sulawesi, 34 sites in Kalimantan and 34 sites in Eastern Indonesia.

The project is expected to create at least 650,000 direct jobs and 3 million indirect jobs. If a worker has four dependents then the economic benefits of the project will impact 20 million people.

?The program will open up opportunities to use and construct 75,000 tower sets, 300,000+ kilometers of aluminum conductor, 1,382 main station units, 2,600 trafo sets, and 3.5 million tons of steel profile and outer pipe of power plant,? said Sudirman Monday (5/4) in his press release .

The project will use 40 percent domestic content worth IDR440 trillion out of a total investment of IDR1,100 trillion.

The 35,000 MW power plant project is one of the government?s efforts to meet growing electricity demand to keep pace with the economic growth. According to Sudirman, the project will increase the average annual capacity of power generation by 7,000 MW and the average transmission network by 9,300 circuit kilometers per year.

?The project should be used as an opportunity to develop our industry in synergy with national and international investors,? he said.
